This is just a simple bun held together by two scrunchies and hair pins. I used perm rods and Lotta Body Setting Lotion diluted with water to get the curls. On my edges I used aloe vera gel and Giovanni Hair Glue. For moisture I would periodically spritz with water, Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Hold & Shine Moisture Mist. I kept this style for a week.

Work Sisterocks 18 Months
Flat twists and spiral curls. This was a two for one left over from the Air Force Ball (Previous Post). At the ball I had the back pinned up. Here the back is down.

Good bye relaxer, hello Sisterlocks
I was entertaining my kid and you guys at the same time. Anyway, I just applied a little oil to my edges and brushed them back. I then accented my hair with a scarf.

I Got Coined By My Boss ;-)
Dr. D. coined me for taking great care of our patients and for specific acts. I will not bore you with the details. Getting coined is something that usually happens in the military so it was nice and a pleasant surprise to get coined in the civilian sector. I should also mention that my boss loves my hair which makes her way cool in my book.
If you have not already noticed, I am a banger and have always been...even when I was relaxed. I have run across a few ladies with locs who sport bangs. I'm talking palm rolled bangers as well as freeform bangers.

Here I am world, here I am!
So I was in the mall trying on clothes when I decided to snap a few shots of me in all my glory.
I would like to take this moment to talk about the products I use on my hair. Right now I'm into Shea Moisture products. I feel like such a hypocrite because every time I post I'm talking about a new favorite prouct. The truth is that my hair likes to try different things and get bored with the same ole product day after day.
I decided to look at the ingredients in various shampoos and learned that most of the shampoo I use contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate! How did I let that get past me! But these products cleanse so good getting rid of all dat buildup. Will I stop using them, I dunno.
I do have a rant to get off my chest. I am getting tired of natural sistas dogging permies (I was guilty in the past). Live and let live. The impression I get is that people who spend so much time dogigng someone elses choices is really unhappy with themselves. Life is about choices and we have to respect what ever choice someone makes for themselves. I loved my relaxer. Yeah I said it! The problem is that it did not love me back. I must say that I love my natural hair also so it is a win, win for me.

Weight Loss and Styling My Sisterlocks
I have failed thus far at my attempt to drop a few pounds, but I have not given up. Each day I feel pretty strong...until I pass by a Famous Daves, McDonald's, Burger King, etc. As a motivator I went out shopping for summer clothes. I stopped shopping many years ago which has probably contributed to my weight getting out of control. Anyway, I have to pray about this issue because I don't seem to be strong enough to do this on my own.
Anywho, I have not styled my hair for a long time so I decided to do a little something to it this weekend. My length has not changed much which is probably why I have gotten bored with styling.
The parted section is in braids. The remainder of the hair is a braidout with the ends curled with Soft Spike Curlers.
My hair is colored black and I must admit that I'm a little bored with my color, but I may be stuck with it for a while since it is black. I'm told that the only way to go lighter after going black is to bleach the hair which I don't ever plan on doing.
I almost forgot to mention that I stumbled across a blog called BlackNaps and her blog post on styling locks. I have to agree with her......Style Dem Locks. I am not into the wake-n-go look. Besides, when locks are not styled it remined me of a dudes locks (did I date myself saying dudes?). If we are going to wear locks we have to distinguish ourselves from the guys.....right?

One Year Anniversary Continued...
This is my hair without any crinkles or curls . With it being so uneven you can see why the crinkles and curls are a regular part of my life at this stage. If I knew then what I know now I would have gotten my hair cut even before locking.
Observations:
Everything that glitters ain't gold in blogger land! If a process like coloring and heat styling was damaging before locks it is still damaging with locks.
Visit a professional loctician regularly. Seems like the bloggers with the most issues are the ones who never or rarely visit a professional for a checkup. We can all brush our teeth, yet we visit a dentist to eval if we are doing it right....right? Same thing.
Don't wait too long between reti's. You will loose a lock! You should not exceed 7 or 8 weeks, depending on your hair.
I only have two locks that are not staying. The rest are locked 4life. My bunching stage went longer than normal which is why I'm not showing a lot of length. My consultant said my hair is finished bunching which means I should start seeing length. If you look my pre-lock and installation photos you can see that my hair was longer in the beginning than it is now.
No lost locks..
Goals:
Get a hair cut to shape my hair for my two year anniversary......can't wait. I don't favor uneven locks.
Not lose any locks if I can help it.
Drink 8 or more glasses of water per day and stop drinking soda! I am a bit of a soda addict.
Lose weight and get in shape so that I look fabulous with my locks. My significant other is very supportive of my journey so I owe to him as well as myself.
Actually go to the gym instead of just paying for membership and not going.

My Baby Phat Shades
I was feeling it ya'll so I went out and got myself some Baby Phat shades. Currently I am weighing in at 164+ pounds. My goal weight is 135 - 140lbs. I am 5'4". I squeezed everything into a girdle in this pic. You know you have work to do when you have to wear a girdle. This was a come to Jesus moment for me with my weight. Come back and watch the weight melt away because this time I'm serious. Plus you guys will help keep me in check....right?

My One Year Annivesary!
FINALLY!
I thought this day would never come. Below is an inside look at my hair favs. You will notice that I don't have an actually conditioner listed. For what?! Every product I use is extremely nouishing so I consider my conditioning needs met!
I thought this day would never come. Below is an inside look at my hair favs. You will notice that I don't have an actually conditioner listed. For what?! Every product I use is extremely nouishing so I consider my conditioning needs met!
MY ROUTINE
Water to hydrate my locs...inside and out. I use an ultra mist spray bottle. If you are using a regular sprayer rather than an ultramist, you are missing out. I am doing a very poor job of drinking water and it is showing. My skin is a mess and my hair growth is slower than it should be. I plan on increasing my water intake drastically because this is one area where we just shouldn't cut corners.
Rose Petal Certified Rosewater which is known for adding moisture, softness, promoting growth, and the beautiful scent. I spray it all over every chance I get. It dries super fast so if you need to do a quick roller set or twist/braidout, you can use the the Rosewater to cut down on dry time.
Carol's Daughter Tui Jojoba and Shea Butter Hair Sheen (sheen and conditioning) with a bit of Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil For Hair mixed in. The amount of coconut oil depends on your hair needs. The back of the coconut oil states in big letters "FOR HAIR TREATMENT" You have to watch the video to see how much care they put into this coconut oil. I spray my entire head of locks with the mixture after a wash, but for days that follow I spray or "grease" my scalp only so that I don't weigh my hair down too much.
Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey (sheen and conditioning) is my scalp conditioner. I smooth this over my temples/edges everyday. I sometimes spread it over all of my hair for sheen, but rarely because it will weigh the hair down. This product smells wonderful and it goes on really thin which I love. This is a must have product for lockers.
Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner (conditioning) is used after a wash, sometimes daily, and when doing braidouts. It smells wonderful!
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk (conditioning) is a product I sometimes use right after a wash. I apply a very light layer, but the conditioning ability of this product is very obvious. I only use it on wash day because it could weigh the down after repeated use.
ACV in a spray abottle to keep buildup away. I wash my hair once or twice a week because I love it! If I don't wash I may rinse. I spray with the ACV and then jump into the shower.
Fantasia IC 100% Pure Tea Shampoo was recommended on many of the blogs that came before me so I decided to try it out and I really like the result. The Tea Tree in the shampoo I used previously burned my eyes really bad. This shampoo is pretty gentle on the eyes and leaves my hair soft and clean.
My son's baby brush for daily brushing and grooming. This brush is very gentle as it smooths and contours my style. This brush is a must have. I tried soft bristle brushes, but they snag my hair. Nothing worked as well as the baby brush. No snagging at all.
